Mthatha, South Africa

Hi everyone! My name is Jared Grant and I am a volunteer with the Episcopal Young Adult Service Corps. The YASC program sends young adults abroad for one year to do mission work for the Episcopal Church. I feel truly blessed to have been accepted to the program because I feel called to do this type of work. I recently found out that I will be serving in Mthatha, South Africa. My work will be primarily with the African Medical Mission. AMM has been around since the 1980's and runs a primary care clinic in the Itipini community. The clinic sees nearly 9,000 people per year. Itipini (which is Xhosa for "Dump") is built out of scraps of discarded metal and cardboard. It is home to nearly 3,000 people. As soon as I find out more about what I responsibilities will be, I'll be sure to post them. This news is still very new to me, so I am still processing it all. I look forward to exploring this calling and my faith in this new adventure!
